Hi! I’m Amy Scott,
I’ve been a therapist for over 20 years. Bearing witness to human beings in the midst of great suffering has been an incredible gift and teacher in my life. But it changes you. Throughout my career, I have trained, specialized, and certified myself as a skilled practitioner of treating mental illness and the effects of trauma. I thought I understood how to help and that my role was to remedy the illness my clients presented with. To achieve a reduction in symptoms and an improvement in functioning was what I was trained to do.
It wasn’t until I found myself at the mid-life, overwhelmed with existential dread, pre-loaded with ancestral patterns, and triggered by a massive heart opening experience with plant medicines, that I was ushered into a beautiful breakdown of being—and straight into a midlife awakening. Here, I tasted the transpersonal experience and realized something so important.
Our feelings are meant to be felt. We are often taught to suppress them. When we suppress our feelings, we suppress our fullest expression, and thus, our real self. We become saddled with holding the emotional load but we are also frightened to set it down. We don’t know who we are without our pain…and we are afraid to find out! Eventually, life exposes our wholeness—remarkable events occur— and we are forced to turn toward our emotional world and have an inner reckoning with our unmet needs.
This is where healing really begins. When we respect the wisdom in the symptoms of our illness, unhealthy patterns can be traced back to their original wounds, and a rich inner world can be discovered and healed.
If we create the conditions for an inner hospitality that is non-judgmental, loving, and accepting of our wholeness, healing is simply what happens.
My Commitment to Decolonization of My Practices
I am committed to the ongoing decolonization of my practices by acknowledging and challenging the ways in which traditional therapeutic models frequently reflect systemic biases. I integrate diverse cultural perspectives, honor the lived experiences of marginalized communities, and strive to create an inclusive, empowering space where all individuals can heal and thrive. I reject the requirements to rapidly diagnose individuals who do not have their needs and resources met with cultural labels of mental illness and first seek to know and understand the language of symptoms as an adaptation and expression of the innate intelligence of the mind/body/spirit. Together, we will examine your symptoms and treatment through a multi-cultural, spiritually open, non-systemic lens focused on trusting your right to be wholly human and your capacity to heal from within.
